Evaluation question three
Before releasing the final various of my music video, I released a rough cut of the video onto YouTube, this was so I could gain audience feedback from a wide range of people. It is important to do this and gain feedback from the audience because it allows you to see what you have done well and what you need to improve. therefore allowing you to change and develop your video, meaning it should be more successful. Big record labels also pre-release their videos in order to gain feedback. Alongside this, they hold small and selected focus group sessions to gather feedback on their videos. Which allows them to make changes to the video if needed. By doing this it means they are more likely to be successful when officially releasing the video as it will be more appealing to the audience. This will allow them to make a higher profit.
I decided to showcase my work on YouTube because it is a global network that can be accessed by people all over the world. As a result of this my music video rough cut would be available for all of these various people to see. I will be more likely to gain varied feedback from different people. It is very easy for people to comment on my video on YouTube, as there is a comment bar at the bottom of the page where people can easily input a comment and press publish. There is also no limits of the amount of feedback that can be left, as a result I am more likely to gain detailed feedback.
On YouTube I received 7 comments overall from different people. A vast majority of these comments where positive, which included "looks like an actual indie music video as you have taken careful consideration into the 5 mes-en-scene aspects, particularly the location and costume" another was "Amazing camera shots, like the out of focused then focused clips" "The quality of the camera shots were skilled and stable as well as varied. Good job!" and "the acting surprisingly flowed well and the choice of music itself was good" These positive comments made me feel proud as a producer, this is because it is showing all of the research and analysis of other indie artist that I have carried out has paid off. And that I have successful create a music video that the audience will enjoy and will appeal to them. The comment regarding the mes-en-scene made me feel really positive about my music video as a lot of planning went into this.
Although a majority of the were positive, I did receive some were more constructive ones as well. These included, "Camera shots outside were nice but the inside could have been better" This comment made me look back and reflect on the lighting scenes as prior to releasing my rough cut I did consider the standard of the inside lighting. This just confirmed that it needed to be changed. Therefore, from this feed back I re-filmed some of the inside scenes and swapping them with other locations, this included the scene when the artists partner is giving her piggyback into the room with the artist on her back. Also in the argument scene when the couple are sitting on the sofa, I had to increase the brightness but added a filter over the top so that it was clear but you could still see it was a past experience. "did not have enough negative aspects of their relationship, so its less dramatic and sad" This comment made me consider the balance between arguing and positive parts of the relationship, once reflecting back on the video I saw it was unbalanced. Therefore to improve this I did not remove any parts but planned to add in some more negative scenes in the blank parts of the video where there is no footage.
If I was in the music industry the audience feedback will help me because it will allow me to gain constructive feedback on my video, therefore allow me to make changes and alterations so that the video appeals more to the target audience. By doing this is means that it will be more likely that they video will be successfully when out for general release. Which could result in better/higher profits. Also it helps to maintain a good brand image for the artist and record label because they would have released a successful video.

Evaluation question one
My brief for this production was to create a music video that either challenge, conformed or developed conventions of my chosen music genre. Along side this I also had to create two ancillary texts; a magazine advert and a digipak, these were created to help build up a brand image for my artist. I chose the indie genre, specifically Wings by Birdy. I chose this genre because I feel this indie music is mostly based on life experiences of the artist therefore it is easier to find relatable stories to create a narrative. Therefore helping me in creating a professional music video that the audience will engage with. I chose specifically Wings, because I feel I have a good understanding of the lyrics and could link it with some of my own personal experiences. This will help me to create a better narrative/concept that my audience can relate to. A music video is a short film including imagery and a song. It is used for various reasons to assist a song and the artist. Some of these include helping the audience to understand the song better. Also it is a promotional tool, which tells a story and helps to attract a particular target audience. Furthermore, it offers a insight into the artist and the audience but into the artists lifestyle, enable the audience to build a relationship with them. The video helps the audience to remember the song and often a video is actually requested by the audience. There are three different styles of music videos, which are performance (singing/dancing), narrative (telling a story) and concept (selling the audience a theme/idea). Different styles are used for different genres of music videos. the artist/producers will decide what they think will be most effective and use this style.
Also different music genres have various codes and conventions that are expected to be seen in them, these can either be conformed, challenged or adapted. My chosen genre of indie has many conventions, these include a low cost setting (normally public places) this is because the audience will find this relatable and be able to picture themselves in the setting due to most likely having been to a similar one before. This can be seen specifically in Ed Sheeran 'The A team' the female character is seen walking through a field. The audience would find this setting highly relatable as it I somewhere they are familiar with and have been before. As a result of this the audience will gain a better understanding of the narrative.
Another convention of indie music is having a narrative based music video. Meaning that a clear storyline can be seen throughout the video. This can be seen in Ed Sheeran 'Drunk' through a variety of close/mid/long shots of Ed at a bar getting drunk. By having a narrative based music video the audience will find the lyrics and song more relatable as they will be able link a story to the song and gain a better understanding. Also the audience will be able to link in similar personal experiences to the song which will help them to remember the song better. This will benefit an artist because it means that their audience will understand and relate to their music better.
Also a convention of the indie genre is the mes-en-scene, specifically costume hair and makeup. Indie artists normally wear casual everyday clothing with natural hair/make up. This is because they audience are able to relate to this as they are likely to wear similar clothing. It also helps to build up the artist representation as an ordinary person, which makes them appear more approachable and relatable to the audience. This displays to the audience that the artist is not trying to hide behind an extravagant appearance and are showing their true selves to the audience.
I gained inspiration while looking into these indie conventions and gained inspiration to use in my own music video.
The first indie conventions that I used was low cost settings. Some of the various settings that I have used includes a forest, field, house and market. The field can specifically be seen through a mid shot of my artist Sharna singing/performing in the field. In the background you can see the grass, trees and some buildings.
This type of setting of the field are usually used within indie music videos because they are quite low budget productions, also these types of settings are highly relatable to the audience because they are extremely like to have been in similar settings. This helps to create the effect that indie artists are just like everyday normal people, they do not feel the need to hide behind a massive production and are quite happy just singing in a field, helping to create a sense of realism. This will benefit the artist because if their audience finds them more relatable then they are likely to follow the artist and listen to their other music. Furthermore, from this specific shot of Sharna it represents her as isolated and alone. This could reflect how she feels within her relationship and feels alone as her partner is not fully supportive of their relationship. This would make the audience see the artist as quite vulnerable which will make them feel sorry for her. They will also be most likely be able to relate to her through this shot as 17-30 year olds are most likely to have been through a time where they have felt alone and quite vulnerable.

This can specifically be seen through a close up/side view shot of the artist looking at a photo of her and her female partner. This is conventional to the indie genre as indie artists music videos are normally based on past life experiences and bad relationships and them going through this time. However, it is slightly developed through my video as we use a two females in the relationship instead of the stereotypical male and female. The audience will find this representation of the artist as nostalgic as relatable as the target audience are likely to have experienced a time in their life where they have missed someone or a certain time in their lives.

The narrative for my video is about my female artist reminiscing and remembering her relationship with her female partner; showing the positive and negative as she wanted an open relationship however her partner wanted to keep it a secret. By doing this the audience will feel like they are gaining an insight into a chapter of the artists life and really getting to know the artist as they are seeing the good and bad sides of her life. This will make them a feel as if they could relate to the artist better as they have a better understanding of the lyrics and they story to go along side it. It is conventional to the indie genre to have a mainly narrative based music video, this is because indie music is mainly based of real life experiences therefore having a narrative based video will help to give the audience to link a story to the video.
Another indie convention that i have included in my music video is the mrs-en-scene, specifically the costume/hair/make up. This mid shot shows Sharna wearing a black jacket, black turtle neck and black jeans with natural looking hair and make up. This is quite a casual looking outfit which makes him appear like a normal person and this makes her quite relatable to the audience. Also the black colour has connotations of loneliness and implies a sense of mystery. It also implies that she has stuff bottled up and hidden from the world. This suggests to the audience that she is feeling quite isolated and vulnerable as she has no one to speak to about anything. This will make them feel sorry for her and want to help her. This is conventional to represent her as quite ordinary and lonely as indie artists normally base their music on bad times in their lives. And also represent themselves as ordinary as it makes them relatable to the audience as they are likely to wear similar clothing.
Also i have been inspired to use high contrast filters over the scenes of the couple in the past. This can been seen in this mid shot of the couple together standing on the bridge in one of the happy moments of their relationship. Sharna's partner is hugging her from behind and Sharna is happy and smiling. We only used this filter for the happy moments of the couple together. Over this clip we layered a dreamy filter and also increased the saturation a bit which gives the effect that it is based on the past. This would make the audience feel happy for her as it is showing a happy moment in her relationship compared to all of the negative parts in the relationship that they have seen.
Although we did follow a lot of conventions we did also develop one as conventionally a male and female relationship is used in the narrative of the music video however in ours we have developed and adapted this as we used a homosexual female couple. This can be seen in this mid shot of our homosexual female couple sitting on the sofa together. It is subversive as homosexual couples are not used as often as they are not always as relatable to the audience. However, in our modern society homosexual couples are far more accepted than in the past. Which conveys a sense of realism to the audience because they are likely to be aware of a situation like this, whether they are in it themselves or it is a friend. 10 years ago it would not be as acceptable for two homosexuals to be seen on screen but our society has now developed to be more accepting.
I think that my music video is successful in demonstrating indie conventions as I have incorporated many within the video, and developed and adapted these to suit my video. I took many inspirations from my research and used these within my own video, which out this research i do not think my music video would be as appealing to my target audience. As well as using many of these conventions in my video i also took and developed some of the conventions as well. This has overall helped me create a slightly subversive indie music video that appeals to my target audience.

Rough cut
Before releasing our final cut of our music video we produced a rough cut in order to gain feedback from our target audience. This feedback is important to have before releasing our final video, because it allows us to find out what parts of the video worked well and what parts need improvement. By pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of our music video we are able to reflect on the video, and are able to change/adapt specific highlighted weaknesses. As well as this, by showing us what has worked well it gives my group and i positive reinforcement to keep on working and it also shows us how we can improve by gaining inspiration from what has worked well. Therefore it is essential to carry out a rough cut so that we have previewed our production to our target audience and gathered by their thoughts and feedback.
There were various ways in which we have collected our audience feedback. The first way we was able to gain feedback on our music video was by frequently screening parts of our production to other class mates. This was extremely helpful, as they also study the subject, meaning they have a specialised interest in the subject of music videos. Which resulted in us gaining feed back on our specific editing and cinematography, instead of just the general appearance of the video. Some of feedback included "good variety of shots" and "some shots are grainy". Another really good way that we were able to gain feedback was through our two media teachers. They are both very knowledgable in this subject, therefore can offer us precise and valuable feedback about how to make our video look like a proper media production and conventional to our genre. YouTube was the main way in which we gained feed back on our video. This is a really good platform to gain feedback from our audience because, it allows us to gain feedback from a wider audience, as youtube is a global video sharing website. Our video is available to a wide range of different people, this ensures that all of the feedback we gain is not bias and provides honest feedback. People that know members in our group are likely to sugar coat their feedback, whereas strangers are more likely to be truthful due to them not having any personal relations with any of the group.

The advice we gained from these rappers was really helpful because they are already established in the industry, therefore can offer a good insight into what will work well. This feedback will benefit our production because we can make appropriate changes in order to improve the video, by doing this we can make sure that all of our production appeals to our audience. Which is important because it will help to maintain the audiences attention when they are watching because it will appeal to them. A rough cut will benefit the industry because the record label can preview it to a small specific target group this will allow them to gain detailed feedback to highlight the good and bad features. Which shows them how successful the video would be if it was released how it currently is. Then the record label can adjust the video in order to improve it and appeal constantly to the audience. This will allow them to target a better audience which makes it likely to be more successful. As a result it means that the record label is likely to be more successful. This will lead to the label being more likely to make profit and have high sales. Also the artist will be promoted more successful and gain good representation.
This was one of our comments that we gained from publishing our rough cut on youtube. This comment was predominately positive, some of the highlights from this comment are "looks like and actual indie music video" "clear storyline" and "good balance of performance" This comment made me feel proud of the video so far because it took my group and i a very long time to come up with our narrative and display this in our video. Therefore, by this being noticed in by someone out of our group is amazing. We also took into careful consideration the conventions of the indie genre by including low budget settings, the appearance of our artist and that is is based on past experiences. 
This comment was also majorly positive, the highlights of this feedback were "great job syncing the video with the lyrics, great performance and perfect framing" As a group we had a major focus on making sure the lyrics matched and that the video flowed, so getting a comment like this made me feel very good about our video as it showed that this specific focus had been paying off.
This was also some more positive feedback that we gained via YouTube, the highlights of this feedback was "amazing camera shots" "good use of setting" and "fashion is commonly linked with an indie genre" Again this comment made me feel very positive about the video, it was so important for us to create a conventional indie production so that it appealed to the target audience and this comment is supporting that so far we have done this successfully. One of the negative pieces of feedback that we gained was from our teachers, this was "you need to include more negative parts of the couples relationship" Although at first I didn't particularly agree and thought we had enough. Upon reflection I can now see that more negative shots are need to show the contrast between the positive. Therefore showing the roller coaster relationship. By my teachers pointing this out my group and I are now able to improve our video so that when we come to publishing it, it will be as successful as possible.
This was another slightly negative comment that we got from YouTube, the most negative parts were that "gaps" and "a wider range of negative shots of the couple would make it a bit better" This is very is similar to out teachers comments. As two different people have said this my group and I have prioritised this as something that needs to defiantly be included to improve our video.
This was another piece of negative feedback we got, it was embedded within this mostly positive comment, "the lighting inside could have been better" I am grateful that this person has taken time to notice a small detail like this, and now that it has been pointed out my group and I can see that the lighting inside could have been bright which would have overall improved the shots and made the video clearer. From all of the feedback that we have gained we are able to see what has worked well and what hasn't worked as well. Therefore from the few negative comments that we did receive my group and I have noticed that most of the actual footage that we have filmed is fine and we just need to add in some footage and re-film certain parts. We need to film some more negative scenes of the couple fighting to show the contrast in their relationship, and make it clear why the couple are fighting. We also need to re-film some of the inside scenes to ensure that we have good lighting in order for the audience to be able to see clearly what is going on.
